Scam alert: Be on the lookout for fraudulent calls and claims

10 November 2020

We are receiving reports that utility scams are occurring within the Northern Territory. Callers claiming to be from various utility service providers are offering customers discounts and to pay part of their power bills on their behalf. We would like to remind our customers to be cautious when giving out their personal details or banking information and to report any suspicious activity.

Recent reports show that scammers are currently targeting Jacana Energy customers, offering discounts on electricity bills and to pay bills on their behalf.

We have been advised that scammers will ask unsuspecting customers for copies of their Jacana Energy bills, obtaining their electricity account details in the process. Scammers will then make payments to the customer's Jacana Energy account on their behalf and subsequently ask the customer to pay them a portion of the bill minus an alleged discount.

Once the scammers have received the customer's payment, they will dispute their own payment made to Jacana Energy and get the payment reversed through their financial institution. This will leave the customer's Jacana Energy account outstanding and the customer potentially defrauded of a large sum of money.

If you are not sure a call or claim is genuine, hang-up immediately and call us on 1800 522 262 to verify.

If you have been contacted by these scammers or have information about this scam, report it to cyber.gov.au/report or  www.scamwatch.gov.au
